hot celebrities - Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts (born Julie Fiona Roberts on October 28, 1967, in Smyrna, Georgia, USA) is an Academy Award-winning American actress.

She shot to fame during the early 1990s after starring in the romantic comedy Pretty Woman opposite Richard Gere. Since then, Roberts has gone on to become the highest-paid actress in the world with an asking price of over 20 million dollars. Her impressive film career has also given her the title of most bankable actress in Hollywood, with box office receipts well over two billion dollars on the strength of numerous blockbusters such as Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, and Ocean's Eleven. She won the Best Actress Academy Award in 2000 for her critically praised turn as the title character in Erin Brockovich after two previous nominations during the 1990s. She was also placed at the pinnacle of the Ulmer Scale, a comprehensive guide to the global star power of actors and directors in independent and studio films created by James Ulmer, ahead of such other luminaries as Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks. This was partly due to her ability to open a film based solely on her name above the title without the support of a male costar, something few other actresses are able to do.

Roberts is the first of three actresses (as of July 2005, the others are Cameron Diaz and Angelina Jolie) to join the coveted "$20 Million Club", when she signed to do Erin Brockovich for that amount.

Family background

Roberts' father, Walter Grady Roberts, was a vacuum cleaner salesman, actor and writer of Irish, Scottish, Welsh extraction on behalf of his father, Walter Thomas Roberts, and English-Scottish descent on the part of his mother, Beatrice Beal. Julia's mother, Betty Lou Bredemus, a church secretary and actress, was born in Minneapolis in 1934, daughter of football player Wendell John Bredemus (whose mother Eleanor Johnson was born in Sweden) and Elizabeth Ellen Billingsley. Her parents divorced when she was five, and her mother remarried. Her father died of cancer when Roberts was nine. Her elder brother Eric Roberts, from whom she is estranged, is also an actor. So is her niece, Emma Roberts, whom she would often take along on sets when she was younger.

Roberts wanted to be a veterinarian as a child, but soon after graduating from Smyrna's Campbell High School, she headed to New York to join her sister and pursue a career in acting. Once there she signed with Clicks modeling agency and enrolled in acting classes.

Films

Julia Roberts made her film debut playing a supporting role opposite her brother, Eric, in Blood Red, which although completed in 1986 was not released until 1989. Rail-thin, long-legged, and sporting a thick, curly mane of auburn hair, she looked more coltish than elegant in the movie. Here, her large hazel eyes and huge mouth are capable of much expression, sometimes radiance, when she cuts loose with her trademark megawatt smile and a braying laugh.

Roberts first caught the attention of moviegoers with her performance in the film Mystic Pizza in 1988. The following year she was featured in Steel Magnolias as a young bride battling diabetes, garnering her first Oscar nomination (as Best Supporting Actress) for her performance. She catapulted to worldwide fame when she co-starred with Richard Gere in the Cinderella story Pretty Woman in 1990. The role also earned her a second Oscar nod, this time as Best Actress. Her next box office success was the thriller Sleeping with the Enemy, playing a battered wife who escapes her demented husband and starts a new life in Iowa. She played Tinkerbell in Steven Spielberg's Hook in 1991, which was followed by a two-year period of no acting roles other than a cameo appearance in Robert Altman's The Player (1992). In early 1993, she was the subject of a People magazine cover story asking, "What Happened to Julia Roberts?"

Later that year, she co-starred with Denzel Washington in the successful The Pelican Brief, based on the John Grisham novel. For the next few years, she starred in a series of films that were critical and commercial failures, primarily because she was cast in roles that strayed too far from her film persona. She broke her losing streak with the hugely popular comedy My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), and eventually regained her earlier reputation as an actress who could open a movie and guarantee box office success. She also starred with Hugh Grant as Anna Scott, a film actress in the hugely popular 1999 film " Notting Hill ". In 2001, she won critical acclaim and finally received a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich, who helped wage a successful lawsuit against energy giant Pacific Gas & Electric. Julia will appear in a broadway play starting in March 2006. The play is called "Three Days of Rain".

Personal life

Roberts' personal life has often been in the spotlight, a fact that served as the basis of her (1999) film Notting Hill, a romantic comedy about a famous actress falling for an ordinary guy played by Hugh Grant. Her character, Anna Scott, was said to be closely modeled on Roberts herself. (When asked in one scene how much she was paid to appear in a movie, Scott replies "fifteen million dollars"—precisely the amount Roberts had received to appear in Notting Hill.)

Roberts was engaged to actor Kiefer Sutherland in 1991 but ended the relationship just days before the wedding. Julia ran off to Europe with Jason Patric, and the two were eventually a couple after she and Kiefer broke up. She later eloped with country and western singer Lyle Lovett shortly after meeting him. The ceremony was noted by her being barefoot. They divorced in 1995, ostensibly due to their respective career demands keeping them apart, but they still remain friends. Julia also briefly dated Friends star Matthew Perry and Daniel Day-Lewis. For a time she lived with actor Liam Neeson and dated Benjamin Bratt from 1998 to 2001.

Roberts met her husband, cameraman Danny Moder, on the set of her movie The Mexican in 2000. He was already married to Vera Steimberg Moder, but they eventually divorced. Julia and Danny were married on July 4, 2002, in Taos, New Mexico. They became the parents of oddly-named twins, Hazel Patricia Moder and Phinnaeus Walter Moder on November 28, 2004.

Roberts bought a penthouse in Manhattan's Gramercy Park neighborhood. She reportedly loves to shop anonymously, buying her own organic greens on weekends at the market in nearby Union Square. She splits her time between her homes in New York, New York, Venice, California, Malibu, California, and a 50-acre (202,000 m²) retreat in Taos, New Mexico.

She is reportedly a fan of the long-running soap opera Days of our Lives.

Roberts has a production company called Red Om Films ("Moder" spelled backwards; formerly "Shoelace Productions") and has given of her time and resources to UNICEF as well as to other charitable organizations. She has made trips to Haiti, India, and other countries promoting peace, goodwill, and help for others in need.

She has been named one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" a record-setting eight times.

Today's bio:

female celebrities - Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba

Jessica Marie Alba(born April 28, 1981 in Pomona, California, USA) is an American actress. She is known for her roles in movies such as Idle Hands, and her starring role in the TV series Dark Angel. She got her first starring movie role in Honey, and went on to appear in prominent roles in Sin City and Fantastic Four.

Early life

Alba was born to Mark Alba (a Mexican mestizo of Spanish and Native Mexican descent) and Cathy Jensen (whose father was Danish and whose Canadian mother was of French, Italian and English descent). Alba was raised in a military family, living with her parents, her brother Joshua, and her grandparents until she was sixteen. She grew up a sports fanatic and terrorized teachers and grandparents alike with her rebellious behavior. Her father's navy career took the family to Biloxi, Mississippi, and Del Rio, Texas, before they settled back in California when she was nine. Alba's early life was marked by a multitude of physical maladies, as she suffered collapsed lungs twice, had pneumonia 4-5 times a year, and suffered a burst appendix, a cyst on her tonsils, asthma, anorexia, and a kidney infection. This served to isolate her from other children at school because, as she claims, she was in the hospital so often that no one knew her well enough to befriend her. She also revealed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno that she suffered from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder as a child. Her health improved, however, when her family moved to California.

Acting career

Jessica Alba on The Tonight Show with Jay LenoAlba had expressed interest in becoming an actress since the age of five, took her first acting class at age twelve, and was signed by an agent nine months later.

Alba's first appearance in film was a small role in the 1994 feature Camp Nowhere, as Gail. She was originally hired for two weeks but her role soon turned into a two month job when the actress in one of the more prominent roles in the film dropped out, and Alba was picked to replace her because her hair matched that of the original actress.

Alba appeared in two national TV commercials for Nintendo and J.C. Penney, and later was featured in several independent films. She branched out into TV in 1994 with a recurring role as insufferable young snob Jessica in three episodes of the popular Nickelodeon comedy series The Secret World of Alex Mack. She then won the role of Maya in the first two seasons of the TV series Flipper. Under the tutelage of her lifeguard mother, Alba had learned to swim before she could walk, and was a PADI-certified scuba diver, skills which were put to good use on the show, which was filmed in Australia. In 1995 she appeared in the film Venus Rising as Young Eve.

After graduating from high school at age sixteen, Alba studied acting with William H. Macy and his wife, Felicity Huffman, at the Atlantic Theater Company, which was developed by Macy and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and film director David Mamet.

In 1998 she appeared as Melissa Hauer in a first-season episode of the Steven Bochco crime-drama Brooklyn South, as Leanne in two episodes of Beverly Hills 90210, and as Layla in an episode of The Love Boat: The Next Wave. In 1999 she appeared in the Randy Quaid comedy feature P.U.N.K.S..

Alba rose to greater prominence in Hollywood in 1999 after appearing as a member of a snobby high school clique in the Drew Barrymore romantic comedy Never Been Kissed, and as the female lead in the 1999 comedy-horror film Idle Hands, opposite Devon Sawa. Her big break may have been as the star of the popular Fox sci-fi TV series Dark Angel, which was co-created by writer/director James Cameron, who picked Alba from a pool of 1,200 candidates for the role of genetically-engineered super soldier Max Guevera. The show ran for two seasons before being cancelled in 2002. Since then her most notable roles have been as an aspiring dancer/choreographer in Honey, the stripper Nancy Callahan in Sin City, and as the classic Marvel Comics character Invisible Woman in Fantastic Four.

Alba's most serious award nomination to date is that of a Golden Globe for "Lead Actress in a Drama Series" during the first season of Dark Angel. She did not win.

She has stated that despite being an extremely ambitious actress who desires the level of fame enjoyed by stars like Tom Cruise, she once told James Cameron during filming on Dark Angel that she did not want to direct because it appeared to be too difficult an undertaking, but that he responded with the prediction that she would end up directing sooner than she expected.

Personal life

Alba was engaged to her Dark Angel co-star Michael Weatherly for a year. In January 2005 she began dating Cash Warren, a director's assistant on Fantastic Four, whom she met when filming that movie.

Regarding children, Jessica has stated:

I'm really girly when it comes to kids. I've been surrounded by kids my whole life because I'm the oldest of 15 cousins - I've been changing diapers since I was six. I want to have a couple, for sure.

She announced on the UK teen site "Teen Today" in 2005, prior to the birth of her brother's child, that she was beginning a children's clothing line:

"About four of my girlfriends have babies so they have no time for me. I figure if I can do baby clothes maybe they'll have more time to hang out!"

She is a self-professed animal lover (although she dislikes reptiles and rodents) who owns two pugs named Sid and Nancy.

Religion

During an interview with GQ magazine, Alba said that in her teen years she became a born-again Christian in rebellion against her parents, but later abandoned this. She explained:

One of the reasons why I chose not to be (a devout Christian) is because a lot of people gave me a lot of grief for just being a woman and made me feel ashamed for having a body because it tempted men. I didn't understand what that meant because I was like, 'God created this...' That was a hard time in my life.

As the daughter of conservative parents, Alba, whose grandparents did not even allow her to wear a bathing suit around the house, maintains a no-nudity clause in her contract, though she has claimed she had been willing to be nude in Sin City. She remarked of a GQ shoot in which she was scantily-clad:

"They didn't want me to wear the granny panties but I said, 'If I'm gonna be topless I need to wear granny panties."

Trivia

Her brother Joshua appeared with her in "And Jesus Brought a Casserole," the first season finale of Dark Angel, in which he played Krit, one of her X-5 brothers who wanted to help destroy Manticore.

She has a tattoo of a daisy with a ladybug on it on the back of her neck, and one of a butterfly just above her anal cleft. [3]

According to an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, her measurements are 34-24-34. [4]

Jessica Alba revealed that she envisions a much older man as her ideal partner, having stated, "Morgan Freeman, Sean Connery, Robert Redford, Michael Caine I have this thing for older men. They've been around and know so much." [5]

Jessica is presently Tiger Beer's new face in commercials.

female celebrities - Jessica Biel

Jessica Biel

Jessica Claire Biel (born March 3, 1982 in Ely, Minnesota), is an American actress, best known as Mary Camden on the television drama 7th Heaven from 1996 to 2002.

Biography

Jessica was born in Minnesota to Jonathon Edward Biel and Kimberly Conroe; the family is of German, French, English and Choctaw Native American descent. Biel was raised in Boulder, Colorado, where her family had moved to when she was very young. She initially trained to become a vocalist with the hope of performing in musical theater and appeared in several musicals at an early age including The Sound of Music, Annie, Beauty and the Beast, and Anything Goes.

Early Life

It wasn't until she attended the International Modeling & Talent Association Convention in Los Angeles in 1994 when her career started to take off as a teen print model. However, her big break came when at 14 years old when she landed the role of Mary Camden on the WB TV Series 7th Heaven. The family drama from Aaron Spelling and Brenda Hampton became the most popular (and remains the longest running) series on the fledgling network. Jessica's film career also began at age 14 when she played alongside Peter Fonda in his Golden Globe winning performance in Ulee's Gold (1997).

Acting appearances

After her departure from 7th Heaven she accepted projects mainly geared to teens and young adults including Summer Catch (2001), The Rules of Attraction (2002) and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003). The movies were met with mild reaction from the box office and panned by many critics. It was believed that Jessica's career may have suffered damage from mistakes in her youth including posing for Gear magazine and her ranting against 7th Heaven creator Brenda Hampton. Nevertheless, she is currently a sought after young Hollywood actress which is apparent by her roles in Blade: Trinity (2004) and Stealth 2005.

Commericals

Aside from acting, Jessica became a spokesmodel for L'Oreal cosmetics in 2002.

Career

In 2000, Jessica enrolled in undergraduate study at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. She left before completing a degree program in order to pursue her acting career. Jessica returned to 7th Heaven full time for the 2001-2002 season and then focused the attention on her movie career and has made minimal TV appearances since then.

Personal life

Her hobbies include ballet, soccer, running, yoga and hiking. Jessica currently resides in Los Angeles.

Controversy

In 2000, Jessica posed topless in a layout of Gear magazine. It was controversial because she was only 17 at the time of the shoot. Her frustration and fear about being typecast was one of the reasons that led to her decision. She blamed her saintly image on 7th Heaven for limiting her film career, including losing a lead role in American Beauty which eventually went to Thora Birch. Jessica also hoped that by posing she would get out of her 7th Heaven contract, which she accomplished. She later said she regretted posing for the magazine and regards it as a learning experience.

Trivia

Has one younger brother, Justin.

Is a vegan and active in PETA.

female celebrities - Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Ann Simpson (born July 10, 1980) is an American Pop singer who rose to fame during the late 1990s. She starred with Nick Lachey in the MTV reality show Newlyweds, released her own line of beauty products called Dessert, and started a career as an actress with appearances in the TV series That '70s Show and in the film The Dukes of Hazzard.

Beginning

Simpson was born in Abilene, Texas and raised in Richardson, a suburb of Dallas, Texas. She is the daughter of Joe Truett Simpson (a former Baptist youth minister) and Tina Ann Drew (a former Sunday School teacher). She has a younger sister, Ashlee, who launched her own music career in mid-2004. Jessica started singing at the age of twelve as a part of her Baptist church choir. At the same age, she made an unsuccessful application for The New Mickey Mouse Club, which starred fellow pop singers Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, among other future stars.

Jessica attended J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas. Simpson was discovered singing at a church camp by a head of a small contemporary Christian record label and recorded an album over the next three years; however, the label folded before the record could be released. She dropped out in her senior year in order to tour and promote her demo album, which was funded by her grandmother, Joyce (thus the reason for the name of her 2004 holiday album, Rejoyce: The Christmas Album); she later earned her GED. During this time, she toured with the Christian Youth Conference circuit performing with Kirk Franklin, God's Property and CeCe Winans. She and her father sold copies of the album after her performances.

Tommy Mottola of Columbia Records obtained a copy of the album and, thinking she had potential as a pop singer, signed her as such. Christian influences can still be found in much of her music.

Music career

Sweet Kisses

On November 23, 1999, Jessica released her debut pop album Sweet Kisses, which reached a peak of number twenty-five on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and also made the top forty of the U.K. charts. The album proved to be a success, selling two million copies in the U.S. Her first single, the Platinum-selling "I Wanna Love You Forever," reached the top five of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and the top ten in Canada and the U.K. in late 1999. Her second single, a duet with then-boyfriend, now-husband Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees, "Where You Are," was a modest radio hit. The last single from the album, the John Mellencamp-sampled "I Think I'm in Love with You," was a top forty hit in the U.S. and a top twenty hit in Canada and the U.K. In 2000, Simpson won two Teen Choice Awards for Choice Breakout Artist and Love Song of the Year ("Where You Are").

Irresistible

Simpson's second album, Irresistible, released on June 5, 2001, reached the top ten of the Billboard 200 and top twenty of the Canadian album charts. Despite this improvement, the album's sales were less than satisfactory; to date, it has only managed to be certified Gold in the U.S. for selling over 500,000 copies. The title track lead single, "Irresistible," reached the top twenty in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., as well as the top forty in Australia and Switzerland. A follow-up single entitled "A Little Bit" was also released, but failed to achieve much success apart from reaching the top twenty in Portugal.

Between her second and third albums, Simpson released a collection of remixes entitled This Is the Remix on July 2, 2002. However, the collection failed to even chart on the Billboard 200.

In This Skin

Coinciding with Newlyweds, her third album, In This Skin, was released on August 19, 2003. On a whole, the record featured a much more mature sound compared to her earlier releases. Though the album initially was not a huge success, it got its chance to rebound on the charts when a special collector's edition was released on March 2, 2004. This helped Skin to reach a peak of number two on the Billboard 200 and the top forty of the U.K. charts, due largely in part to the success of Newlyweds. The album eventually proved to be her most successful, selling three million copies in the U.S. and allowing her teetering music career a second chance. The first single from the album was a cover of Diane Warren's "Sweetest Sin"; the song was not very successful, however, and caused a setback in sales of Skin early on. The follow-up single, the Gold-selling "With You," enjoyed much more success, and has gone on to become her signature song and arguably most successful single. The song reached the top ten in the U.K. and the top twenty in the U.S. and Australia, as well as on world adult charts. The third single, a cover of Berlin's "Take My Breath Away," also reached the top twenty in the U.S. A cover version of Robbie Williams' "Angels" was released as the fourth and final single from the album.

After the double success of her reality show and In This Skin, Simpson began to bank on her new-found popularity by releasing a line of edible beauty products called Dessert Beauty and Dessert Treats. She has also unleashed her own clothing line called JS, which is named after her own initials.

And the Band Played On

Jessica's next album, And the Band Played On, is set to be released sometime in 2006. It has been described as having "a little bit of everything in it," and it will sound like "Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, Stevie Nicks — it's all over the place. But then there's songs for us girls to dance to in the club," according to Simpson. Information has it that the lead single off the album will be "Fired Up," a song written by Simpson and Scott Storch, who described the song as Jessica's "Dirrty." It has been rumored that the track is to be produced by Lil' Jon. For the first time, Simpson has participated for much of the process of the creation of the album; she has registered a number of new songs on ASCAP.com and is also the executive producer of the album.

Reality Show

Jessica and Nick Lachey. On October 26, 2002 Simpson married Nick Lachey. Simpson famously announced that she remained a virgin until her wedding night, making Lachey the only man she had been with. During the summer of 2003, Simpson and husband Lachey's reality show Newlyweds began airing on MTV. Though Simpson was moderately famous before the series began, the show is considered responsible for transforming her into a star. However, on November 23, 2005, Simpson and Lachey officially announced their separation in a joint statement.

Throughout the run of three seasons, she often appeared as a stereotype of a dumb blonde, notably when she asked whether the Chicken of the Sea tuna she was eating was chicken or fish, and when she thought that buffalo wings were made from actual buffalo. Her apparent stupidity made the show a huge hit, making the average rating for each episode about 1.4 million viewers. When introduced to Interior Secretary Gale Norton, Simpson responded: "You've done a nice job decorating the White House."

Banking on the success of her new popularity, she appeared on a variety show with Lachey on the ABC called the Nick and Jessica Variety Hour on April 11, 2004. A pilot for a sitcom on ABC was also planned, but was rejected by network executives in May 2004. During that summer, Simpson won three Teen Choice Awards for Female Fashion Icon, Hottie Female, and Female Reality/Variety TV Star, further proving that Newlyweds had greatly strengthened her overall popularity. In 2005, the series won a People's Choice Award for Favorite Reality Show. Shortly after, Newlyweds wrapped.

Movie Career

Jessica in The Dukes Of Hazzard.During the summer of 2005, Simpson made her her big screen debut as Daisy Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard. The film debuted at number one in the box office charts, grossing more than thirty million USD. One of the tracks off the soundtrack for the film, "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," was sung by none other than Simpson. It peaked within in the top twenty in the U.S., but made it well into the top ten in other countries such as the U.K. and Australia, making it arguably Simpson's biggest international hit. The provocative music video for the single also earned itself quite a bit of media attention.

In the aftermath of Dukes, Simpson's fans noticed her buttocks flattening. Speculation abounded as to the cause of her disappearing behind. The general consensus is that it resulted from a change in diet and exercise regimen.

Jessica Simpson is also rumoured to become the next Bond Girl in the upcoming James Bond film, Casino Royale starring Daniel Craig as James Bond.

Separation

In November 2005, after months of speculation, Simpson and Lachey officially announced that they had separated, though reports stopped short of the couple indicating a divorce. However, later that month it was confirmed that they will indeed get a divorce. Nick and Jessica did not sign a prenuptial agreement, thus leaving Nick free to receive half of her net worth under California law. Last year alone she grossed $35 million dollars.
